Happy New Year! Or Not?

Happy New Year! Or Not?

The celebration of the New Year on January 1 has historical roots in the adoption of the Julian calendar by Julius Caesar in 45 B.C. Prior to this reform, various ancient civilizations celebrated the new year at different times, often tied to lunar or agricultural events.

Consider exploring the rich history of New Year celebrations and their ties to the moon cycle and various calendars. From Mesopotamia's akitu festival, which marked the new year with the first new moon after the spring equinox, to Egypt's celebration coinciding with the appearance of Sirius and the flooding of the Nile, the significance of lunar events in ancient calendars is fascinating.

In Pre-Islamic Arabia, the absence of a standard calendar led to the establishment of the lunar Islamic calendar by Umar I in 638 A.D. This calendar, starting with the sighting of the crescent moon on 1 Muharram, holds cultural and religious significance, dating back to the migration of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina.

Ancient Rome's early calendars, influenced by the lunar cycle, faced challenges in synchronization, leading to the occasional introduction of an extra month. The reforms initiated by Julius Caesar in 45 B.C. introduced the Julian calendar, shifting the official start of the civil year to January 1 and incorporating leap years.

As Spiritual People, we may celebrate the civilized New Year on January 1st, the Lunar New Year on February 10th and/or the Spring Equinox on March 19th in 2024.

All 3 dates have energetic significance in our society and our lives. Our awareness of these dates and the energy they carry can assist us with harnessing that energy and taking proactive action in the progression and growth on our journey!

So yes! Celebrate New Year’s day today by cooking your Black Eyed Peas, Greens & Cornbread. Make sure you start the year off with a clean home both physically & energetically. Don’t forget to blow a little cinnamon through your door and speak your money prayers over your home.

These rituals are rooted deep in Hoodoo whether you know it or believe it or not. What our Grandparents taught us are traditions we should absolutely continue 🫶🏽
